Participation in European Projects

OSCARS

OSCARS aims to strengthen the role of the Science Clusters in the ERA by developing domain-based Competence Centres and by fostering the implementation of Open Science projects funded through a cascading grant mechanism.

  • Duration: 2024-2028
  • Funding: 25 M EUR
  • Involvement: Grantee for the project “FAIR image analysis across sciences” (250K EUR budget). I co-wrote and currently coordinate the grant. By creating workflows that can be shared and reused across multiple scientific domains, such as bioimaging, environmental sciences, and astrophysics, the project aims to tackle challenges related to data integration and collaboration, ultimately enhancing scientific innovation and discovery.
EVOLVE

EVOLVE aims to significantly strengthen Euro-BioImaging to reach its next level as a pan-European organisation and to live up to the needs and expectations expressed by its continuously expanding communities of users, partners, ERIC members, industry and other relevant stakeholders.

  • Duration: 2024-2028
  • Funding: 5 M EUR
  • Involvement: I have designed and conceptualised the Euro-BioImaging Scientific Ambassadors Program. I also manage the Euro-BioImaging Task Force and lead task 5.4 “Engaging early career researchers”.
AI4Life

AI4Life aims to reduce the disparity between the theoretical applicability and the practical use in life sciences of state-of-the-art AI-based image analysis methods. AI4Life will bridge the gap between two rapidly developing fields: AI method development, and biological imaging; providing urgently needed services through the European trans-national and virtual access infrastructures.

  • Duration: 2022-2025
  • Funding: 4 M EUR
  • Involvement: I lead AI4Life’s work package on ‘Communication, Outreach & Training’; organise open calls and challenges to foster engagement with the scientific community. In addition to this, I serve on the Steering Committee and the Project Management Executive Board, contributing to strategic planning and governance. My responsibilities also include reporting on project deliverables and budgets to the European Commission.
EuroScienceGateway

EuroScienceGateway leverages a distributed computing network across 13 European countries, accessible via 6 national, user-friendly web portals, facilitating access to compute and storage infrastructures across Europe as well as to data, tools, workflows and services that can be customised to suit researchers’ needs.

  • Duration: 2022-2025
  • Funding: 4 M EUR
  • Involvement: I coordinated the grant writing process.
ELIXIR-Converge

ELIXIR-Converge helped standardise life science data management across Europe by developing a data management toolkit for life scientists.

  • Duration: 2020-2023
  • Funding: 8 M EUR
  • Involvement: I cowrote extension for WP9 due to COVID Emergency and led task 9.4 “SARS-CoV-2 Analysis”.
EOSC-Life

EOSC-Life brought together the biomedical research infrastructures in Europe to make life science data more accessible, interoperable, and reusable by integrating it into the EOSC.

  • Duration: 2019-2023
  • Funding: 23.7 M EUR
  • Involvement: I worked on a scientific demonstrator on reusing images to gain insights into the nucleolus biology. Simultaneously, I took on project management and communication tasks within the work package on ‘Tools Collaboratory’. My responsibilities included coordinating Scientific Collaboration Agreements between EOSC-Life and EOSC-Nordic, as well as between EOSC-Life and EOSC-Pillar. Additionally, I participated as a member of the EOSC-Life working group dedicated to identifying the technical training needs of the EOSC community. I led task 2.4. “Tools Collaboratory”.
EOSCpilot

EOSC pilot supported the first phase in the development of the European Open Science Cloud.

  • Duration: 2017-2019
  • Funding: 10 M EUR
  • Involvement: I worked on the Bioimaging Science Demonstrator to reanalyse publicly available images in order to extract new biological knowledge. Tasks involved cloud deployment at the EBI Embassy cloud using technologies such as OpenStack, Terraform and Ansible. MongoDB and R for the data storage and analysis.
